Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I get started? Do I need a referral?
The only thing you need to get started is to contact Transformative Counselling. You can reach out by phone, text message, or email. If nobody is there to respond to you call then you can leave a message with a name and contact number and someone will return your call. No referral is needed.
  • Are services covered by OHIP?
Unfortunately OHIP does not cover these services.
  • Are services covered by my health insurance benefits?
Psychotherapy services are covered by most health insurance plans but you would need to confirm with your insurance plan provider to see if they cover the service under a Registered Psychotherapist belonging to the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) and to what extent they cover the cost.
  • How long are sessions and how often do they occur?
Sessions are usually 60 minutes long and typically occur once each week. Depending on your needs, they may be more or less frequent. In certain situations, weekly sessions are recommended to help to receive proper support and establish momentum towards your treatment goals. Session frequency may be changed as you feel more secure or become more comfortable in using what has been learned in therapy. Ultimately, it is up to you often sessions are scheduled.
  • How long will therapy last?
This question is difficult to answer because each person and situation is different. It depends on a person's goals, personal characteristics, the nature and complexity of the issue being experiencing, and other factors happening in the person's life. Therapy can be short term or long term, it can address practical or more in-depth issues, depending on your specific needs and goals. During the initial sessions, you and the therapist will be able to come up with specific goals and plans on how to address your needs and issues, which will give a better idea on what therapy will look like for you.
  • What can I expect at my first session?
The first session or two is to give an opportunity for your therapist to get to know you and to understand your situation and what led you to seek out therapy. During the process you will receive a treatment plan that includes goals specific to you. The first session or two is also an opportunity for you to get know your therapist so that you may feel safe and comfortable during the treatment.
  • How much will it cost?
The therapy will cost $90 per session. A sliding scale of payment is offered in special situations. If using health insurance coverage, payment is still required. Payment is required at the end of the session, accepting cash, credit card or e-transfer.
