Gerard LaPenta M.Div., STB
It was about 20 years ago that I had gone through my own personal transformation that led me to quit my job as an Executive Chef, return to school and change my career. Although I was happy as a chef, I felt an emptiness and longing to work with people on a more personal level. I wanted to feed peoples' mind and spirit, rather than their stomachs.
As I began to walk on a new path in my life, I encountered many obstacles that I had to deal with. Those challenges I faced allowed me to grow and develop as a person, which otherwise I would not have been able to do. My struggles brought me to a place where I needed support, and so I found myself needing help from a counsellor and a spiritual director.
My own personal experience drives my professional role as a counsellor and a spiritual director. I have the advantage of knowing what it is like to be on the other side of the counsellor's chair - to be the one who is reaching out for help. Of course I do not only rely on my own personal experience, I have my academic training in counselling and ministry to instruct me.
Studying and training at the Toronto Centre for Pastoral Counselling Education and at Regis College, I find myself confident and proud to be a counsellor and spiritual director. I continually am studying and training to better myself, not only for my own personal development but for the sake of those whom I serve.
